Mount Airy Approves $95K Storm Siren Contract
15 Sep
Summary
- Mount Airy will install storm alert sirens for severe weather warnings.
- The decision followed a fatal 2025 flash flood incident.
- The project costs $94,836.14, with town funds covering 78%.

The Town Council in Mount Airy, Maryland, has officially approved a contract to install storm alert sirens. This measure aims to provide immediate warnings to residents during severe weather events.
The decision was significantly influenced by a devastating flash flood in July 2025, which tragically resulted in the death of a 13-year-old boy. In response, the town's Inclement Weather Task Force has diligently worked towards implementing an effective siren warning system.
The approved contract, awarded to American Signal Corporation, totals $94,836.14 for two T-130 siren devices. These sirens are designed to activate for tornado warnings, catastrophic flash flood warnings, and destructive thunderstorm warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
Fundraising efforts have successfully gathered over $20,000, accounting for approximately 22% of the total cost. The town council has allocated $74,336, covering the remaining 78%. Installation is slated for two town-owned sites to ensure 99% town coverage, with a target completion and testing date of December.
