Midwest Snowstorm Threatens Hazardous Commutes Across Three States

On Monday, November 17, 2025, the National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists issued winter weather advisories across three Midwestern states as a significant snowstorm is set to impact the region overnight into Tuesday morning.

The urgent alerts are in place for southern and central Minnesota, western Wisconsin, and eastern South Dakota. Meteorologists have warned of heavy, fast-accumulating snow that could lead to potentially dangerous road conditions, hazardous commutes, and the risk of power outages.

In Minnesota, forecasters predict rain transitioning to a mix of snow overnight, with heavy accumulations of up to 3 inches expected in a line extending from Canby and Redwood Falls through the southern Twin Cities metropolitan area to just south of Eau Claire. Similar conditions are expected in western Wisconsin, where 1 to 4 inches of wet snow is anticipated.

The eastern parts of South Dakota will also be affected, with the NWS office in Sioux Falls warning of 1 to 4 inches of snow, with locally higher amounts possible. The Tuesday morning commute is of primary concern across the region, with quick snow accumulation, poor visibility, and slippery roads.

The NWS has advised motorists to slow down, use caution, and avoid unnecessary travel where possible until conditions improve. These events arrive as millions across the northern part of the country have already experienced early-season snow and cold, underlining the heightened risk to travel and infrastructure as the region prepares for winter.
