Michigan Braces for Strong Tornadoes
11 Mar
Summary
- Tornado threat heightened for southern Lower Michigan tonight.
- Potential for strong EF2 to EF3 tornadoes exists.
- Large hail and severe wind gusts are also expected.

Severe thunderstorms are forecasted to impact the southern third of Lower Michigan this evening and overnight. A cold front moving slowly southward along I-94 is expected to trigger these storms.
The primary threat, including the potential for strong tornadoes, is concentrated south of I-94, affecting areas like Ann Arbor, Jackson, and Kalamazoo, as well as Michigan's southern border cities. The tornado probabilities have been elevated, with a chance of EF2 tornadoes in some areas and a possibility of EF3 tornadoes in far southwest Lower Michigan, due to extreme wind shear.
In addition to tornadoes, large hail is a significant concern for areas up to Grand Rapids and Lansing, with smaller but still severe hail possible in Saginaw and Detroit. Brief, severe wind gusts may extend as far north as Saginaw and Mt. Pleasant but are more likely from Lansing southward. Continuous monitoring of storm development is advised.
