Met Office: No Heatwave as High-Pressure System Diverts Jet Stream
21 Aug
Summary
- UK experienced 4 heatwaves this summer
- Met Office says next high-pressure system won't bring a heatwave
- Jet stream being pushed north into Arctic, drawing in low pressure

According to the latest weather reports, the UK is set to experience a shift in its summer weather patterns over the coming weeks. The Met Office has stated that the high-pressure system approaching the country is unlikely to bring about another heatwave, despite the country having experienced four such events already this season.
The weather monitoring service explained that this new high-pressure system is positioned differently, sitting to the north of Scotland. This positioning means it will not be ushering in the kind of intense heat that characterized the previous heatwaves. Instead, the system is acting as a "boulder in a stream," diverting the jet stream in a way that will influence the weather in more subtle ways.
One branch of the jet stream is being pushed northward into the Arctic Circle, while another is dipping southward, drawing in an area of low pressure. This shift in the jet stream's behavior is expected to result in a change in the UK's weather patterns over the final weeks of summer, without the extreme temperatures seen earlier in the season.
