Ludhiana Swelters: 44°C Heatwave Paralyzes City
28 May
Summary
- Daytime temperatures reached a scorching 44°C, impacting daily life.
- Government offices adjusted hours, closing by 1:30 PM for safety.
- A western disturbance is expected to bring cooler temperatures soon.

Ludhiana is currently under the grip of a severe heatwave, with daytime temperatures reaching a punishing 44°C. Overnight temperatures offer little respite, remaining at a high of 26°C. The extreme heat has led to the curtailment of government office hours, with administrative operations now closing at 1:30 PM to ensure public safety.
The searing conditions have emptied public spaces, and commuters are advised to carry water rations to avoid heat exhaustion. Commuters described the outdoor air as an open oven, highlighting the severity of the situation.
However, relief is anticipated as a western disturbance, a storm system originating from the Mediterranean, is moving across northern India. This system is expected to bring much-needed cloud cover and scattered thundershowers, significantly reducing temperatures.
Forecasters predict a dip to 42°C on May 28, followed by a sharp drop to 38°C on May 29 as the storm system arrives. The cooling trend will peak on May 30 with a high of 37°C and a low of 21°C, offering a brief period of pleasant weather.
This respite will be short-lived, as the western disturbance is expected to clear by the end of the month. Meteorological data indicates a gradual warming trend beginning May 31, pushing temperatures back up to around 40°C by June 2.
