Lahore Deluged: Heavy Rains Disrupt City, Expose Drainage Woes
9 Sep
Summary
- Lahore hit by heavy rains, causing widespread flooding
- Drainage system unable to handle storm water, leading to inundation
- Electricity supply disrupted as 80 feeders tripped
On Monday, September 9th, 2025, the city of Lahore experienced heavy rainfall that caused widespread disruption. The first spell of rain started around 4:30 pm and continued for about an hour, followed by a second spell from 6:10 pm to 6:45 pm.
According to the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), various areas of Lahore received significant amounts of rainfall, with the maximum of 113mm recorded at Paniwala Talab and its surrounding localities. Other heavily affected areas included Iqbal Town, Jail Road, Gulberg, Lakshami Chowk, and Nishtar Town, among others.
The heavy downpour inundated several major roads, exposing the inadequacy of Lahore's drainage system. A motorist lamented that the city's sewerage network seems unable to efficiently drain the rainwater, a problem that has persisted for years. While the authorities have been executing drainage projects in the city, it remains to be seen whether these efforts will help alleviate the recurring flooding issues.
The rain also disrupted the electricity supply, with nearly 80 feeders of 11kV distribution capacity tripping. The Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) worked to restore power in various localities, but the situation added to the miseries of the residents.
The district administration, led by the Deputy Commissioner Syed Musa Raza, visited the affected areas and directed Wasa to employ all resources to restore access for the people. The administration also emphasized the need for prompt action and warned of negligence in the water drainage process.
As the monsoon season continues, Lahore's residents await a more robust and resilient infrastructure to withstand the heavy rainfall and prevent the recurring cycle of inundation and disruption.
