Coastal Flooding Threatens LA Beaches
7 Oct
Summary
- Dangerous rip currents and breaking waves are expected.
- Minor coastal flooding will occur from Wednesday to Friday.
- Increased risk of ocean drowning and moderate beach erosion.
Southern California beaches are under a Beach Hazards Statement due to dangerous rip currents and elevated surf expected from this afternoon through late tonight. This is followed by a Coastal Flood Advisory, in effect from Wednesday morning to Friday evening.
Minor coastal flooding is anticipated, particularly around high tide. Vulnerable low-lying areas, including beach parking lots and harbor walkways, may experience seawater inundation. Moderate beach erosion is likely.
The conditions pose an increased risk of ocean drowning, with rip currents capable of pulling swimmers out to sea. Waves could wash individuals off beaches and rocks, and potentially capsize small boats nearshore.
Coastal flooding impacts are expected to be greatest in Long Beach, Catalina Island, Zuma Beach, and Malibu. Residents are urged to take precautions to protect flood-prone property and avoid driving through unknown water depths.
