Kolkata experienced significant rainfall, with 123.7 mm recorded between Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The majority of this, 69.3 mm, fell on Wednesday. This heavy downpour was primarily caused by a low-pressure trough that moved over Madhya Pradesh by Wednesday morning.
Although the low-pressure system no longer directly affects Bengal, its passage, along with an upper-air trough, has intensified the monsoon flow. This strengthening is expected to bring continued light to moderate rain to Kolkata and districts like Bankura and Murshidabad.
Southern and eastern parts of Kolkata saw heavier rain, with Palmar Bazar receiving over 50 mm. The city has already achieved a seasonal rainfall surplus of over 20%, with June and August recording above-normal rainfall, and July being slightly below normal.
Met officials anticipate scattered showers for the next three days, with a possibility of enhanced rainfall starting next Monday. The trough affecting southern states is expected to weaken and shift towards north Bengal, which currently faces a rain deficit. As a result, south Bengal may see less frequent rain in the coming days, while north Bengal could experience heavy showers.
The persistent rain has kept Kolkata's maximum temperature below normal, registering 29.6 °C. A slight increase in temperature is expected once the intensity of the rainfall subsides.
