Kolkata experienced its first significant rainfall in nearly four months on Tuesday, a welcome event that temporarily lowered the city's temperatures. The Alipore Met office recorded 6.3 mm of rain, marking the first precipitation since October 30. This occurrence led to a notable drop in the maximum temperature, which fell to 26.8 degrees Celsius, 3.7 notches below the seasonal average.
The dip in mercury was a result of cloud cover and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal interacting with a trough line. While this brought relief from the recent higher temperatures, meteorologists anticipate a change in weather patterns. From Wednesday onwards, the skies are expected to clear, and temperatures will begin to rise gradually, likely stabilizing around the normal mark for the next three to four days.
Officials also noted that the change in wind patterns would bring drier westerly winds, keeping humidity low even as temperatures increase. This suggests that the upcoming warmer weather will remain pleasant. Historically, February in Kolkata usually sees some rainfall, with notable exceptions in 2023 and 2018.
