17 Mar
Summary
- Kolkata experienced its first squall with 72 kmph winds on Monday night.
- A red alert was issued for Kolkata, Howrah, and South 24 Parganas.
- Mercury dropped nearly six degrees Celsius instantly due to rain and wind.

Kolkata experienced its initial nor'wester squall on Monday night, bringing thunder, lightning, and gusty winds that reached 72 kmph. This event prompted the Met office to issue a red alert for Kolkata and surrounding districts, including Howrah and South 24 Parganas.
The sudden downpour and strong winds caused an immediate drop in temperature by approximately six degrees Celsius, from 32.9° to around 26°. The squall, which lasted for over an hour, affected various parts of the city and led to some waterlogging.
While a lighter spell occurred on Sunday night with minimal rainfall, Monday's squall was significantly more intense. Met officials predict a decrease in thundershower activity from Tuesday, with a possibility of renewed rain by Friday.
Meteorologists attribute the powerful storm to strong moisture incursion and favorable low-level wind patterns, aided by a western disturbance. Nor'westers are common in April and May but can occur in March under specific weather conditions.
