Kolhapur Downpour Dampens Navaratra Spirits
18 Oct
Summary
- Heavy rain and thunderstorms disrupted Kolhapur, flooding roads and cutting power.
- Navaratra celebrations, including Raas-Dandiya events, were cancelled due to the storm.
- Unseasonal showers brought relief to drought-affected farmers awaiting much-needed rain.
An intense rain spell, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, significantly impacted Kolhapur on Saturday evening. The severe weather led to flooding of key roads, uprooting of trees, and disruptions in power supply, negatively affecting the ongoing Navaratra festivities.
Heavy showers lashed the city for nearly two hours from around 3 PM, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas and slowing down traffic. Hundreds of devotees visiting the Mahalaxmi temple also faced difficulties, with arrangements made to prevent slipping. Festive events like Raas-Dandiya programmes were cancelled, leading to disappointment among participants.
Despite the disruption, the unseasonal showers offered a glimmer of hope for drought-affected farmers in Kolhapur district, where several areas had been dry since September. Farmers had been concerned about the heat damaging crops, making Saturday's rainfall a welcome relief. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Kolhapur and surrounding districts until October 20, predicting further rainfall.
