Cauvery River Surges: Bhagamandala Flooded as Monsoon Intensifies
1 Aug
Summary
- Cauvery River overflowed at Bhagamandala for the first time this year.
- Record rainfall of 183mm in Shanthalli, Pushpagiri region.
- Floodwaters partially submerged a bridge, disrupting traffic flow.

As of August 1, 2026, the monsoon has intensified across Kodagu district, leading to significant flooding. The Cauvery River has overflowed at Bhagamandala, a common occurrence during the peak monsoon season. Bhagamandala recorded 125mm of rainfall in the 24 hours prior to Saturday morning, though cumulative rainfall for the year is less than last year.
In the Pushpagiri region of Somwarpet taluk, Shanthalli received the highest rainfall in the district at 183mm. Heavy showers in the Harangi dam catchment area have increased inflow to 20,000 cusecs, with all water being released into the river. This has caused floodwaters to partially submerge a bridge downstream of the dam, disrupting traffic on the Kushalnagar-Somwarpet road.
Authorities have taken measures to ensure public safety, barricading the flooded bridge and deploying personnel to prevent access. Additionally, a landslide at Second Monnangeri village has impacted vehicular movement, underscoring the widespread effects of the heavy rainfall in the region.
