Kerala on Orange Alert: Heavy Rains Threaten Floods, Landslides
8 Jun
Summary
- Orange alert issued for northern Kerala districts due to heavy rainfall.
- Risk of flash floods, waterlogging, landslides, and mudslides is high.
- Southwest monsoon advances, bringing heavy rains to multiple Indian states.

Kerala is currently experiencing intense monsoon rains, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an Orange Alert for districts like Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected, increasing the threat of flash floods, waterlogging, and landslides. Warnings are in effect through June 9, with a broader alert for multiple districts extending coverage.
The IMD's forecast indicates that rain or thundershowers are likely across Kerala and Lakshadweep between June 8 and June 13. This intense rainfall poses risks to infrastructure, including roads and power systems, and could damage crops. Strong surface winds are also anticipated along the coastlines.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is progressing favorably, expected to cover additional parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and northeastern states within the next three to four days. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the northeast. In stark contrast, Delhi-NCR will face soaring temperatures reaching up to 44 degrees Celsius before potential relief from thunderstorms and strong winds on June 11.
