Kashmir braces for harsh Chillai Kalan amid dry spell's end

The prolonged dry spell in Jammu and Kashmir is expected to conclude with potential snowfall from December 20th to 21st, heralding the arrival of Chillai Kalan, Kashmir's most severe winter period. This anticipated precipitation follows a six-week dry spell that left the landscape parched and riverbeds with minimal water.

Officials reported an 85% deficit in rain and snowfall between November 1st and December 9th, with only 6 mm of average precipitation recorded against a normal of 43 mm. The dry weather also contributed to a string of forest fires, particularly in north Kashmir. Meanwhile, night temperatures remain below freezing across much of the valley.

The meteorological center forecasts cloudy weather with light to moderate snow over higher reaches and rain in the plains of J&K. Travelers are advised to follow traffic advisories due to potential slippery road conditions on important passes. Kashmir typically receives 70% of its precipitation from Western Disturbances during the winter months.
