Kanpur Freezes: Second Coldest Night Recorded

The Kanpur region is currently experiencing a severe cold spell, marked by its second coldest night of the season. The minimum temperature recorded was a sharp 3.6 degrees Celsius, a significant 3.2 notches below the seasonal average. This chilling pattern is expected to persist across the Ganga plains, with only minor temperature fluctuations anticipated. Residents can anticipate clear, sunny afternoons, but the onset of cold conditions is predicted to be swift after sunset, bringing considerable discomfort.

Thick fog descended upon the city starting around 9 PM, drastically impairing visibility. While the mornings have been clear, the fog is a recurring feature due to increased humidity, as indicated by the India Meteorological Department. This phenomenon, coupled with expected north-westerly winds gaining speed, will likely continue to affect transportation and daily life during the night and early morning hours.

In light of these conditions, farmers have been advised to ensure adequate irrigation for their crops to safeguard them against potential frost damage. Meanwhile, moderate to heavy snowfall is forecast for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, which is anticipated to intensify the cold wave and chilly weather across the plains of the Ganga. Light showers are also a possibility for western Uttar Pradesh around January 20.
