This past summer, from June to August 2026, has been confirmed as the warmest since records commenced in 1894. Official figures reveal an average temperature of 20.5C, a notable increase from the 30-year average of 17.7C for the same period.
The heatwaves were substantial, with temperatures exceeding 30C on 13 separate days. The hottest single day recorded was 25 June, reaching an intense 39.3C. These conditions align with climate change predictions of hotter summers.
Furthermore, the summer of 2026 also secured its place as the second sunniest on record, accumulating 986 hours of sunshine. While rainfall was below average at 106.9mm, it did not result in drought conditions, unlike other regions.
This period bore similarities to the famous 1976 drought but was hotter, with more frequent and intense heatwaves, according to meteorologists.
