22 Jul
Summary
- Temperatures expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius in major cities.
- Over 4,500 hospitalized with heat-related illnesses recently.
- New 'kokushobi' category introduced for days reaching 40 C.

Japan is grappling with a severe heatwave, as the country experiences sweltering temperatures officially designated as "brutally hot days." Heat stroke alerts have been issued across much of the nation, with forecasts predicting temperatures to reach 40 degrees Celsius in cities like Kumagaya and Nagoya.
Authorities are strongly advising residents to take precautions, emphasizing the importance of using air conditioning, staying hydrated, and minimizing time spent outdoors. The summer heat has become increasingly intense in recent years, with Japan recording its highest temperature ever at 41.8 degrees Celsius last year.
Even before the current extreme conditions, a significant number of people were hospitalized due to heat-related illnesses. Between July 6 and July 12, 4,580 individuals were taken to hospitals, and tragically, seven of them later died. The weather agency's introduction of the "kokushobi" classification for days reaching 40 C or higher underscores the growing concern over extreme summer temperatures.
