Italy Braces for Winter's Icy Grip
5 Jan
Summary
- Cold, rain, and snow are forecast for Italy around Epiphany.
- Northern Italy is already experiencing temperatures below freezing.
- A deep cyclone forming over the Tyrrhenian Sea will worsen conditions.

Italy is set to experience a sharp decline in temperatures, ushering in a true winter phase around the Epiphany Holiday. Cold northerly currents have already caused temperatures to drop below freezing in many lowland areas of northern Italy, with initial snowfalls anticipated at medium-low altitudes.
A deep cyclone is expected to form over the central-lower Tyrrhenian Sea on January 6th and 7th. Fueled by frigid air, this system will trigger a significant deterioration of weather conditions, bringing heavy precipitation and a sharp temperature drop, especially to central and southern regions. Snow is forecast to fall at very low elevations, potentially reaching valley floors.
While northwestern Italy is expected to be largely shielded, northeastern regions may see light snow. The low-pressure system will also generate strong winds, including Bora, Tramontana, and Mistral, along various coasts, leading to very rough seas. A gradual temperature increase is forecast from the weekend.
