India is currently experiencing a severe winter spell, characterized by dense fog and cold day conditions affecting large parts of the country. On January 6, 2026, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued forecasts for dense to very dense fog and cold days across northwest, central, east, and northeast India. Morning visibility has been extremely poor, leading to travel disruptions.
In response to the extreme weather, several regions have implemented school holidays. Jaipur, Tripura, Lucknow, and Meerut have announced closures for various school levels to safeguard students. While schools are closed for students, campuses will remain operational, and examinations will proceed as scheduled in some areas.
