India Shivers: Chilling Cold Grips North and East

Northern and eastern India are currently experiencing an intense cold wave, with temperatures dropping significantly below normal. Hisar in Haryana recorded a frigid 0.2 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest spot in the region. Delhi endured its coldest January morning since 2023, with the minimum temperature at Safdarjung station falling to 2.9 degrees Celsius. This starkly contrasts with the ongoing harvest festivals across the country.
The severe chill has not spared other states, with Punjab and Haryana reporting temperatures up to four notches below average. In the eastern part of the country, West Bengal and Jharkhand are also battling freezing conditions. Gumla in Jharkhand recorded 0.8 degrees Celsius, while Darjeeling in West Bengal registered 3 degrees Celsius. The cold snap is expected to persist for at least another day in some areas.
Meanwhile, the Kashmir Valley remains in the grip of its harshest winter period, 'Chilla-i-Kalan'. Srinagar recorded minus 3.9 degrees Celsius, and Shopian registered minus 6.1 degrees Celsius, the coldest in the valley. Several water bodies, including parts of the Dal Lake, have frozen over due to the extreme cold. Delhi's air quality also remains a concern, with the AQI in the 'very poor' category.
