Hurricanes Polo & Nolo Unleash Fury on Mexico, Hawaii

Hurricane Polo intensified to a Category 3 storm, with sustained winds of 125 mph (205 kph), as it approached Mexico's Baja California peninsula on Monday. The storm is expected to bring dangerous flooding, mudslides, and high winds to the region overnight. Communities like Puerto San Carlos are experiencing heavy preparations, with residents boarding up homes and bolstering earthworks against anticipated 90% vulnerability to flooding.

Further north, Hurricane Nolo, while pulling away from Hawaii, has left a significant impact. High-wind and high-surf advisories remain in effect for parts of the islands. The storm's outer rainbands are still projected to cause severe flooding and potential landslides, with some areas on the Big Island anticipating up to 20 inches (50 centimeters) of rainfall. Over 120 National Guard members have been deployed, and federal disaster relief has been approved for Hawaii.

This active Pacific hurricane season aligns with El Niño patterns, which typically promote tropical storm formation. Mexico's navy has positioned response personnel and supplies in Pacific ports. Forecasters anticipate Hurricane Polo could bring heavy rain to the U.S. Southwest later in the week.
