Pacific Fury: Marie, Lowell Unleash Hurricane Might

Hurricane Marie has intensified and is now a hurricane, active in the Pacific alongside the formidable Category 4 Hurricane Lowell. Tropical moisture that previously caused excess rainfall and flooding in Texas, following former Tropical Storm Edouard, is forecast to significantly decrease by the end of today.

This moisture is expected to spread across North and Central Texas, bringing a slight cooling effect before warmer temperatures return over the weekend. In Florida, remnants of ex-Dolly will contribute to continued wet weather with likely heavy thunderstorms anticipated throughout the Labor Day weekend.

Long-range forecasts suggest Hurricane Lowell's core will pass west of the main Hawaiian Islands between late Monday and Tuesday. However, considerable uncertainty exists regarding its precise track. Kauai and Oahu are expected to experience impacts from Lowell's outer bands, with a non-zero possibility of a direct hit on Kauai.

Currently, Hawaii is experiencing tropical storm-force gusts due to the pressure gradient between high pressure to the north and Hurricane Lowell to the south. These winds are expected to lessen somewhat tomorrow and significantly over the weekend. Moisture pulled north by Hurricane Lowell is projected to reach the Big Island by Sunday, increasing across the islands by Monday and peaking on Oahu and Kauai late Monday or Tuesday.

Offshore Mexico, Hurricane Marie remains a threat, and another storm is forecast to form and follow a similar track. Some moisture from Marie may reach the desert Southwest over the weekend.
