Hawaii Braces for Hurricane Lala's Fury

Tropical Storm Lala is intensifying and is expected to become a hurricane by August 15 as it targets Hawaii. As of August 13, the storm was approximately 455 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, with sustained winds of 60 mph and moving west-northwest. Forecasters predict Lala will approach the Big Island early on August 15. A hurricane warning is in effect for Hawaii County, while a tropical storm watch has been issued for Maui County. Governor Josh Green has declared a state of emergency, anticipating significant impacts starting August 14. The most critical threat from Lala is anticipated to be widespread flooding due to heavy rainfall, with the Big Island and Maui potentially receiving 8 to 12 inches, and isolated amounts up to 25 inches. This rainfall could trigger dangerous flooding and mudslides. Additionally, large swells are expected to create hazardous ocean conditions, including dangerous surf and rip currents, along with localized coastal flooding and beach erosion. Residents are advised to review hurricane safety plans, know evacuation zones, and never drive through flooded roads.
