Halloween Weather: Rain, Snow Threaten Trick-or-Treaters
30 Oct
Summary
- Southern California faces rare Halloween rain for the first time since the 1980s.
- An atmospheric river fuels wet conditions and flash flooding potential in the Southwest.
- Chilly temperatures will prevail in the Northwest, even without precipitation.
As Halloween approaches on October 31, 2026, weather forecasts indicate a varied landscape across the United States. For many in the eastern U.S., a dry and seasonably cool holiday is expected. However, parts of the central and western U.S. may encounter rain and even snow, potentially disrupting trick-or-treat plans.
Southern California is set to experience its first rainy Halloween since the 1980s, with measurable rain last recorded in San Diego in 1987. Palm Springs and Riverside also anticipate similar conditions. In the Sierra Nevada, precipitation could fall as snow. This wet pattern in the Southwest is partly fueled by tropical moisture from the "Pineapple Express."
Flash flooding is anticipated in central Arizona on October 31, with an increased threat over the Four Corners region on November 1. While Phoenix might avoid the heaviest rain until after trick-or-treating, other parts of the Southwest are not as fortunate. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are also possible in parts of the South, from South Texas to southern Arkansas.
Conversely, the Northwest is expected to be the chilliest, with temperatures in the 30s and 40s. The Midwest anticipates pleasant 50s and 60s, though showers are possible. The East, excluding Florida, will largely enjoy dry conditions with pleasant temperatures and manageable winds.
