Guernsey Dodges Drought Despite Dry Spell

Guernsey is currently not in drought, according to the Guernsey Met Office, despite enduring a significant dry spell. Senior meteorologist Adam Heaume stated that absolute drought conditions, defined as 15 consecutive days with minimal rainfall, have not been met.

While July recorded only 5.4mm of rain, a mere 12.5% of the monthly average, and dry weather has persisted since March, an exceptionally wet start to 2026 has kept the year-to-date rainfall close to the long-term average. This has prevented the island from officially entering drought status.

Despite the absence of official drought declarations, the prolonged dry period is a notable concern for the agricultural sector. Guernsey Water is encouraging residents to use water wisely, suggesting methods such as collecting and reusing water. May and June also experienced record-breaking high temperatures.
