25 May
Summary
- Disposable barbecues pose significant fire risks during heatwaves.
- Discarded cigarettes and water bottles can start destructive fires.
- Starting fires intentionally can lead to prosecution and danger.

With the current heatwave intensifying, a firefighter from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging the public to exercise extreme caution outdoors. Ben Wyatt, an on-call firefighter at Longnor Community Fire Station, highlighted that areas like Longnor often experience a surge in outdoor fires during warmer weather.
Wyatt identified disposable barbecues, campfires, and discarded cigarettes as the primary fire risks in the region. He emphasized the severe consequences of such fires, stating that deliberate ignition can lead to personal danger and criminal prosecution. He recounted past incidents where a carelessly discarded cigarette caused a significant fire damaging foliage.
Another alarming incident involved a fire started by sunlight magnified through a discarded water bottle. Wyatt implored the public to dispose of cigarettes responsibly and ensure all rubbish is either binned or taken home. He also strongly advised against using barbecues or open fires in the countryside to prevent further incidents.
