Record March Heat Challenges New Firefighters
20 Mar
Summary
- Nearly 100 seasonal firefighters face extreme heat during training.
- Training academy temperatures soared above 90 degrees in mid-March.
- Cooling stations and hydration are crucial for trainee well-being.

In the North Bay, extreme heat is creating unexpected challenges for nearly 100 seasonal firefighters attending Cal Fire's first training academy of the year. Ninety-five firefighters were pushing their limits on Thursday at the Napa Valley academy, where skills are assessed and team building occurs. Cal Fire Deputy Chief JC Greenberg noted that mid-March temperatures already exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit are presenting new difficulties for the recruits, who are training in their full wildland gear.
Cooling stations equipped with ample ice and water are a vital resource for the trainees. Firefighters are prioritizing hydration and electrolytes, understanding that falling behind can impact performance throughout the week. Large fans are also deployed to help manage the heat during intensive sessions. This early acclimation to extreme temperatures serves as realistic preparation for the conditions they will encounter during their summer assignments, emphasizing the importance of physical training and staying hydrated.
