Europe's Weather Split: Heatwave North, Cold Snap South
5 May
Summary
- Greece and Turkey face unseasonable cold, with high winds and heavy rain.
- Central Europe enjoys summer heat, with Poland experiencing record temperatures.
- Northeastern India and Bangladesh brace for severe thunderstorms.

Europe is currently experiencing a stark meteorological divide. Greece and Turkey are battling a late-season cold snap, with unseasonably low temperatures and significant precipitation. Gale-force winds are impacting the South Aegean islands in Greece, gusting up to 60mph. Turkey's Central Anatolia region has already received half its average May rainfall in just 24 hours, and higher elevations anticipate up to 30cm of snow.
In contrast, Central Europe is enjoying a warm early summer. Poland, in particular, is forecast to see temperatures soar, with Warsaw expecting a high of nearly 31C on Tuesday, about 12C above average. This unseasonable heat across regions like Poland is expected to be short-lived, with a cold front predicted by midweek.
Farther east, northeastern India and Bangladesh are on alert for severe thunderstorms. These pre-monsoon storms, known as kalboisakhi, could bring downpours exceeding 50mm in three hours, alongside damaging hail, strong winds, and lightning. The region's terrain makes it susceptible to flash flooding and landslides.
