Seven regions in England are currently under yellow Cold-Health Alerts (CHAs) issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). These alerts, which began at 6pm on February 17th and will remain in effect for 72 hours until 6pm on February 20th, serve as an early warning for potentially adverse temperatures. The affected areas include the North East, North West, Yorkshire and The Humber, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, and the South West. London and the South East are currently unaffected.
The CHA system typically operates from November 1st to March 31st annually. This initiative, a collaboration between the UKHSA and the Met Office, aims to alert the health and social care sectors about impending weather conditions that could impact public health. Currently, the Met Office is forecasting mixed conditions, including rain and snow, particularly in southern England. Strong winds are also anticipated, which could exacerbate the impacts of the weather.
In preparation for these conditions, residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather forecasts and prepare for potential disruptions. This includes checking properties for flood risk, preparing emergency kits with essential documents and supplies, and ensuring readiness for possible power outages. Information regarding home insurance and pet care during emergencies is also advised.
