Winter Arrives Early: Snow Dumps on Australian Alps
7 May
Summary
- South-eastern Australia received early snowfall, benefiting ski resorts.
- Cold temperatures allowed snow guns to produce snow effectively.
- Ski areas experienced temperatures significantly below average.

Australia's popular alpine areas have received an early winter coating of snow due to a recent cold front. Ski resorts across Victoria, Tasmania, southern New South Wales, ACT, and parts of South Australia have capitalized on the overnight snowfall.
Temperatures in these regions dropped significantly, with some areas experiencing falls between 2C and 8C below average. In Victoria, snow was observed falling to altitudes as low as 400 meters, providing a rare and substantial dusting for many.
Ski resorts took advantage of the frigid conditions, with snow guns effectively mixing cold air and water to create artificial snow. Mt Buller reported successful snow production for the first time after weeks of testing, with temperatures reaching -5C.
Other resorts, including Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Thredbo, and Selwyn, also showcased their snow-making capabilities on social media. While the southeast experiences winter conditions, the rest of the country is expected to see average temperatures.
