Delhi recorded its warmest January day in seven years on Thursday, as the Safdarjung observatory registered a maximum temperature of 27.1 degrees Celsius. This reading was 6.8 degrees Celsius above the normal seasonal temperature for this time of year.
The last time Delhi experienced such high temperatures in January was in 2019, when the mercury reached 28.7 degrees Celsius. The average maximum temperature for January so far this year has been 20.4 degrees Celsius.
Looking ahead, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a change in weather patterns. An ongoing western disturbance is expected to bring cloudy skies and rainfall to the region. Consequently, the maximum temperature is predicted to fall sharply to 19 degrees Celsius on Friday, with the minimum temperature settling around 12 degrees Celsius.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and rain. Early Friday morning, residents can expect one or two spells of light rain, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph. Further very light to light rain is anticipated later in the day, with shallow fog likely during morning hours.
