Delhi's Autumn Chill: Cooler Temps, Poorer Air Quality Looms
20 Oct
Summary
- Delhi recorded its lowest minimum temperature at 17.1 degrees Celsius.
- Northern India anticipates cooler mornings and evenings, residents adjust cooling.
- Delhi's AQI is expected to degrade to poor levels by October 21-22.
As of October 20, 2026, Delhi-NCR has recorded its lowest minimum temperature for the month, with the mercury at Safdarjung Weather Station reaching 17.1 degrees Celsius, 1.3 degrees below the seasonal average. This marks a noticeable shift as northern Indian states begin to experience a mild chill in the mornings and evenings, prompting residents to switch off air conditioners and coolers. The India Meteorological Department forecasts clear skies for Dussehra, with temperatures expected around 32 degrees Celsius maximum and 18 degrees Celsius minimum.
While northern regions embrace cooler weather, southern states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka are facing heavy rainfall, influenced by a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea. Simultaneously, concerns are mounting over Delhi's air quality, which stood at 139 (moderate category) on Monday. The Air Quality Early Warning System predicts a deterioration to the 'poor' category by October 21 and 22, with persistent unfavorable meteorological conditions likely to hinder pollutant dispersion.
Contributing to the worsening air quality are stubble burning incidents reported across several northern states. Between September 15 and October 19, 1,171 such incidents were recorded cumulatively, with Madhya Pradesh and Punjab reporting the highest numbers. Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand also saw significant instances. These factors, combined with unfavorable wind conditions, are expected to lead to a buildup of pollutants in the national capital.
