Delhi Shrouded: Apocalyptic Fog Grips Capital
23 Jan
Summary
- Delhi experienced a dark, foggy day with near-apocalyptic conditions.
- Western disturbance brought thunderstorms, rain, lightning, and strong winds.
- Rain improved Delhi's air quality from 'very poor' to 'poor' category.

The national capital, Delhi, found itself shrouded in an unusual midday darkness, creating an apocalyptic atmosphere. Thick fog and dark clouds obscured the skylines of Noida and Gurugram, lending a grey and blurry appearance to the urban landscape. This dramatic weather shift was accompanied by rumbling thunderstorms, light to moderate rain, lightning, and strong winds, leading to a significant drop in temperature and a return of winter chills.
The India Meteorological Department attributed these conditions to a western disturbance, issuing warnings for several northern regions including Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and North Rajasthan. The alert level was downgraded from orange to yellow.
Amidst the weather turmoil, Delhi's air quality saw a marked improvement. The Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped to 293 in the 'poor' category, a notable change from previous readings. This spell of rain also brought fresh snowfall to popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg in Kashmir and Manali in Himachal Pradesh, blanketing the towns in white.
