12 Jun
Summary
- Thunderstorms brought relief to Delhi after a day of heat and humidity.
- IMD issued a red alert for Delhi due to severe weather conditions.
- Cyclonic circulation over Pakistan triggered instability across northwest India.

Thunderstorms accompanied by rain and strong winds brought a welcome end to a sweltering day in Delhi on Thursday night. Dark clouds gathered, and gusty winds lashed the city, with lightning and rain reported in several areas. In response to the severe weather activity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi, advising residents to take necessary precautions.
Weather experts indicated that a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and its adjoining areas was responsible for the enhanced atmospheric instability across northwest India, including the Delhi-NCR region. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre in Bhopal issued a warning for Madhya Pradesh, forecasting volatile weather including thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, gusty winds, and heat waves for the next five days.
The southwest monsoon has continued its advance, covering parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, West Bengal, and Bihar. Conditions are favorable for its progression into Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming days. In Jammu, despite high daytime temperatures reaching 41.3 degrees Celsius in the city and 46.1 degrees Celsius in Samba, evening showers and hailstorms brought a temperature drop.
