14 May
Summary
- Delhi experienced a severe thunderstorm with winds up to 98 kmph.
- Temperatures dropped by 10°C in many parts of the city.
- IMD issued yellow, orange, and red alerts within an hour.

A fierce thunderstorm swept across parts of Delhi on Wednesday evening, bringing intense winds of up to 98 kmph, accompanied by lightning and rain. This weather event caused a significant drop in temperature, with some areas experiencing a cooling of up to 10°C from the day's high. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) escalated its alert levels rapidly, moving from a yellow to an orange, and then a red alert within approximately an hour, warning of severe conditions.
Despite the severity of the storm and high wind speeds recorded, the actual rainfall was light and scattered across the capital. For instance, Safdarjung recorded only 1.8 mm of rain. This sudden weather change provided temporary respite from the prevailing heatwave conditions in Northwest and Central India. The IMD had previously indicated favorable conditions for the Southwest Monsoon's advance, suggesting an early onset this year.
