On June 20, 2025, a powerful tornado struck the town of Enderlin in southeast North Dakota, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The National Weather Service has now reclassified the tornado as an EF-5, the highest rating on the Enhanced Fujita scale, indicating wind speeds in excess of 201 mph.
The tornado, which was initially classified as an EF-3, traveled 12 miles and was a mile wide. It destroyed at least two homes, damaged other buildings, and even derailed a train near Enderlin. Tragically, the storm claimed the lives of three people: Michael and Katherine Dehn, both 73, and 89-year-old Marcario Lucio.
The weather service conducted additional survey work to determine the tornado's true strength, ultimately concluding that it was one of the most powerful storms to hit the region in recent memory. The reclassification to EF-5 status underscores the devastating impact of the tornado and the need for continued vigilance and preparedness in the face of such extreme weather events.
