Coastal Chaos: Flooding, Winds, and Rain Batter Atlantic Coast

As of October 11th, 2025, a major weather event is unfolding along the Atlantic Coast, with coastal flooding, gusty winds, and heavy rain forecast to impact the region through Monday, October 13th. The unfortunate timing of a seasonal king tide, which occurs during the full moon, and a strengthening low-pressure system offshore is creating a compound weather event that is expected to bring significant flooding to coastal areas.

The National Weather Service has advised that strong onshore winds will push high tides higher into inlets, sounds, bays, and rivers, leading to moderate to major flooding at nearly three dozen tide gauges from North Carolina to Long Island. In some areas, such as the Murderkill River in Delaware, the tide could reach levels that could produce severe damage to homes and businesses, making some roads impassable and isolating neighborhoods.

In addition to the coastal flooding, the weather system is also expected to bring heavy rainfall of 4 to 7 inches or more in coastal areas from North Carolina to Maine, with widespread rainfall of an inch or more along the Eastern Seaboard. The gusty winds, which could reach 40-60 mph or higher, could also down trees and power lines, further exacerbating the impacts of the storm.

Residents along the Atlantic Coast are being urged to stay vigilant and prepare for a range of impacts, from coastal flooding to power outages. State and local officials have already taken action, with the lieutenant governor of New Jersey declaring an emergency and the governor of Maryland urging residents to prepare for the storm.
