Chicago Braces for Thunderstorm Assault This Weekend
16 May
Summary
- Strong thunderstorms are expected to arrive Saturday morning.
- Damaging winds are a potential threat, especially west of Fox Valley.
- Warm temperatures and high humidity will characterize the weekend.

The Chicago area is anticipating significant weather changes, with strong thunderstorms expected to develop rapidly and move in from western Iowa. These storms are projected to reach Chicago around 2 a.m. Saturday and continue through approximately 5 or 6 a.m. The National Weather Service has indicated a possibility of severe conditions, including localized damaging winds, particularly to the west of the Fox Valley.
While most of Saturday is expected to be dry after the morning showers, isolated thunderstorms might occur late in the afternoon or evening. Sunday brings a slight chance of further thunderstorms, especially around midday and possibly in the afternoon. Warm temperatures are forecast for the weekend, with highs reaching the mid-80s on Sunday.
The weather pattern shifts early next week, with a slight chance of rain Monday morning, followed by a broader area of rain and thunderstorms developing later in the day. Increased humidity, with dew points nearing 70 degrees, will contribute to muggy conditions and potentially boost the intensity of evening thunderstorms. Temperatures could approach 90 degrees if precipitation is minimal.
By Tuesday, some rain may linger through the first half of the day. Subsequently, drier and cooler conditions are expected to return, with temperatures dropping back into the 60s by Wednesday and Thursday, offering a respite from the warm and humid weather.
