Charlotte Braces for Historic Snowfall
1 Feb
Summary
- Snowfall projections range from 7 to 13 inches this weekend.
- Dangerous cold and wind chills as low as -5 degrees are expected.
- Over 1,100 flights were disrupted at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

A potent winter storm, driven by a phenomenon known as bombogenesis, is forecast to blanket Charlotte and its surrounding areas with 7 to 13 inches of snow this weekend. Accompanying the heavy snowfall are dangerously cold temperatures, with wind chills potentially reaching as low as -5 degrees Fahrenheit, raising concerns of hypothermia and frostbite.
The severe weather has already led to significant disruptions. Charlotte Douglas International Airport reported over 1,100 flight delays and cancellations as of Saturday afternoon. On the ground, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to hundreds of vehicle accidents, with Mecklenburg County roads being particularly affected due to unsafe speeds. Public transit services, including buses and light rail, have also been suspended.
This forecasted snowfall could rival or exceed some of Charlotte's historical snow records, including the 14 inches recorded in February 1902. While the heaviest snow is expected Saturday, lighter snow is anticipated into early Sunday before the system gives way to sunny skies. However, residents are urged to exercise extreme caution due to hazardous travel conditions and the biting cold.
