Cattaraugus County Under Flash Flood Warning Amidst Heavy Rain

A flash flood warning was issued for Cattaraugus County, remaining in effect until 5:30 a.m. today. The National Weather Service reported that Doppler radar detected thunderstorms causing heavy rainfall, with accumulations ranging from 1 to 3 inches. An additional 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rain are possible in the affected region.

Flash flooding is currently occurring or is expected to begin shortly. The warning encompasses small creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and other poorly drained or low-lying locations. Areas notably impacted include Olean, Allegany State Park, Allegany, St. Bonaventure, Weston Mills, Knapp Creek, Rock City Park, Vandalia, and Limestone.

The weather service stresses the importance of heeding flood warnings, advising individuals to take immediate action by moving to higher ground. Flash floods are sudden inundations that can develop rapidly, posing significant risks, especially to vehicles. The public is cautioned to turn around and avoid flooded roads, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. Campers and hikers are advised to steer clear of streams and creeks during periods of heavy rain.
