Dorset River Brit Swells: Bridport Experiences Flood Transformation

The town of Bridport in Dorset witnessed a dramatic transformation due to the River Brit overflowing its banks. Heavy rainfall overnight saturated the ground, leading the river to surge across the floodplain, creating a wide, brown flow towards the harbour at West Bay. The river ran noisily through meadows, forming new lakes where birds were seen floating. Allotments were inundated, with plastic pots bobbing against fences.

The town adopted an unusual character, akin to a snow day, with normal routines suspended. Paths turned into streams, and new islands emerged, altering the familiar landscape. As Storm Chandra passed, winds and hail added to the atmospheric conditions. The following day, the floodwaters receded, leaving behind flattened grass and scavenger birds searching for food.

The most striking post-flood change was the return of birdsong, as drier, warmer weather enticed avian activity. Green woodpeckers and dunnocks were heard, alongside the tentative songs of overwintering blackcaps. Small flocks of house sparrows were also observed, actively chirping and interacting in scrub areas, showing their habituation to human proximity.
