Bihar Battles Record Heatwave: Water Scarcity Looms

Bihar is facing a severe heatwave, with temperatures surpassing 35°C across the state. In response, the state disaster management department has initiated comprehensive preparedness measures, directing all districts to ensure adequate drinking water supply, public shade, and essential health services. A high-level meeting emphasized the need for water conservation and groundwater recharge, especially in areas with declining water levels, through targeted awareness campaigns.

District officials are prioritizing the health of vulnerable populations, including children, women, and the elderly. Interdepartmental coordination is crucial for implementing standard operating procedures and disseminating early warnings from the India Meteorological Department. The health department is establishing isolation wards and ensuring supplies like ORS and ambulances. Public and engineering departments are tasked with repairing hand pumps and deploying water tankers in scarcity-hit regions.

Educational institutions, including schools and anganwadi centers, are directed to supply drinking water and sensitize students about heat safety. Measures are also in place for livestock and wildlife, with instructions to provide water sources near ponds and tube wells, and maintain cooling arrangements in wildlife parks. Outdoor workers' hours will be regulated, and public transport will carry first-aid kits and water. The energy department will ensure uninterrupted power, and the fire department will be on alert for heat-related emergencies.
