Flood warnings are active for homes near the River Kennet in areas including Burghfield and Holybrook, and along the River Thames around Shiplake and Wargrave. EA flood risk manager Jon Mansbridge indicated these warnings signify floodwater potentially breaching property thresholds and entering homes.
The EA reported that over 30 days' worth of rain has fallen since January, contributing to a widespread risk that teams are actively monitoring. Oxford's Radcliffe Meteorological Station recorded 62% more rainfall than average in January, with February already seeing substantial rainfall.
Groundwater levels are now contributing to the widespread flooding issues. A groundwater alert is in place for Lambourn Valley, and further impacts are anticipated over the coming month. Residents in at-risk areas are advised to secure valuables, move vehicles, and ensure the safety of pets. Driving or walking through floodwater is strongly discouraged due to potential dangers.
