Bengaluru Heatwave Alert: UV Radiation Soars to Extreme Levels
4 Mar
Summary
- Bengaluru recorded an extreme UV Index of 13 despite moderate temperatures.
- High UV levels significantly increase risks of sunburn and skin cancer.
- Health experts warn of accelerated dehydration and heatstroke risks.

Bengaluru and many parts of Karnataka are experiencing unusually severe weather conditions even before the peak summer months. Temperatures in the city have hovered around 32°C to 33°C, with northern Karnataka regions nearing 40°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for potential heatwave conditions across the state.
A significant concern for weather scientists and health experts has been the sharp increase in ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Bengaluru recorded an 'extreme' UV Index of 13, which is considered harmful. This occurred even on a day with a moderate temperature of 32°C, highlighting a rapid rise from lower levels in less than two days.
Health professionals are advising citizens to take immediate precautions. Wearing full-sleeved cotton clothing, hats, UV-protective sunglasses, and applying high-SPF sunscreen are recommended. Schools are encouraged to reschedule outdoor activities, and employers may consider staggered work hours to minimize exposure during the hottest midday periods. Urban areas face intensified risks due to heat-absorbing surfaces and reduced green cover.
