Kolkata to See Thunderstorms & Squalls: Met Warns
20 Mar
Summary
- Kolkata and Bengal districts to experience thundershowers from Friday to Saturday.
- Moisture, heating, and wind patterns are triggering the nor'wester spells.
- Last Sunday's nor'wester brought 17.6 mm rain and 72 kmph winds.

Kolkata and districts across West Bengal are set to experience enhanced thunderstorm activities from Friday to Saturday. The meteorological department forecasts spells of nor'westers, with squally winds also anticipated. These weather events are attributed to a confluence of atmospheric conditions, including moisture incursion, daytime heating, and favorable wind patterns.
This forecast follows a severe nor'wester that struck Kolkata last Sunday night, registering 17.6 mm of rain. During that event, the city recorded its first squall of the season with wind speeds of 72 kmph, which led to several trees being uprooted. The IMD has not ruled out the possibility of gusty winds accompanying the predicted nor'westers.
Neighboring districts such as Howrah and North & South 24 Parganas, along with other southern Bengal districts, are also likely to be affected. These areas may experience thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds ranging between 50 and 70 kmph. Following the anticipated rainfall, the mercury is expected to dip again.
