Coastal Alert: Rogue Waves & Flooding Threat
9 Oct
Summary
- Dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves up to 16 feet are expected.
- High tides will be 1.2 feet above normal this weekend.
- Coastal flooding may close roads and cut off beach access.

Coastal areas including Northern Monterey Bay, Southern Monterey Bay, the Big Sur Coast, and San Francisco County are under a beach hazards statement. This alert is effective from Saturday morning through Monday afternoon. Residents and visitors should anticipate dangerous conditions along the shoreline.
The National Weather Service warns of an increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves, with breaking waves potentially reaching up to 16 feet. High tides are predicted to be significantly above normal, by 1.2 feet on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and 1.1 feet on Tuesday. These higher tides, combined with up to 1.0 foot of surge, will exacerbate the threat of flooding.
Expect flooding in lots, parks, and roads, though only isolated road closures are anticipated. Coastal trails might be inundated, and access to some low-lying beaches and coastal areas could be restricted. The NWS strongly advises against venturing onto jetties, piers, rocks, or other waterside infrastructure. Staying out of the water is crucial due to the hazardous surf, and people are reminded to never turn their back on the ocean.
