Defense Adviser: Weather Forecasts Crucial for Bangladesh's Safety

Prime Minister's Defence Adviser Brigadier General (retd.) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam has called for enhanced weather forecasting to ensure a safer Bangladesh. During a visit to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on July 19, 2026, he underscored that precise forecasts are fundamental for protecting lives, ensuring agricultural output, safe navigation, and national economic security.
Dr. Islam highlighted the increasing risks posed by climate change, including cyclones, heavy rainfall, lightning, heatwaves, and flash floods. He urged the BMD to transform into a modern, technology-driven, and people-friendly institution. Efforts should focus on improving forecast quality and ensuring warnings are easily understood by the public, particularly those in remote areas.
The defence adviser also directed exploration into expanding modern weather monitoring, seismic observation, and mobile-based warning systems. He stressed the importance of robust coordination among disaster management agencies, local administrations, media, and telecommunication providers to effectively disseminate critical weather information.
