Andaman Sea Alert: System Intensifies, Eyes Andhra Pradesh
30 Oct
Summary
- Low-pressure area over Andaman Sea likely to intensify into depression by Oct 31.
- System expected to move towards Andhra Pradesh coast over the following two days.
- Magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck near Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Thursday.
A low-pressure system has formed over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining islands, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting its intensification into a depression by October 31. This weather system is anticipated to proceed west-northwestwards and is on track to approach the Andhra Pradesh coast within two days following October 31.
This development follows the weakening of Cyclone Arnab's remnants. The new system, originating over the South Andaman Sea, is closely monitored. Scientists confirm its transformation from a cyclonic circulation into a low-pressure area. While further intensification is possible, the IMD has not yet issued any warnings regarding a potential cyclonic storm.
Separately, seismic activity was recorded near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.1 earthquake striking 218 km north-northwest of Bamboo Flat on Thursday. As of Friday, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties resulting from this earthquake. This region has experienced seismic events in recent months.
