Heatwave Overwhelms Ambulance Service
8 Jul
Summary
- Ambulance service experienced its busiest day ever last month.
- 4,350 incidents were responded to during the hottest June day.
- New summer plans are being introduced to manage extreme heat.

The South Western Ambulance Service (SWASFT) faced an unprecedented challenge last month during the UK's hottest June day on record. The service dealt with its busiest day ever, responding to a staggering 4,350 incidents.
SWASFT leaders have warned that the extreme heat placed the service "completely beyond anything it has ever experienced." They noted that current heat patterns are more extreme and frequent than sustained summer periods of the past.
In response to the intense pressure, SWASFT is introducing new summer plans, similar to those used to manage winter peaks. This proactive measure acknowledges the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.
Public advice was issued urging individuals to reserve emergency calls for true emergencies. The service received numerous calls for non-life-threatening issues such as sunburn, heat exhaustion, and dehydration, particularly linked to alcohol consumption.
