10 Sep
Summary
- Poland shoots down Russian drones that violated its airspace
- NATO allies, including the Netherlands, assist in the response
- Incident represents the "most serious European airspace violation by Russia" since the war began

In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Poland's air force shot down several Russian drones that had violated the country's airspace on September 9, 2025. The incident, which occurred overnight, prompted a swift response from Poland and its NATO allies.
According to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the country's airspace was "violated by a huge number of Russian drones." The Polish military confirmed that it had scrambled aircraft to shoot down "hostile objects" in Polish airspace, describing it as an "unprecedented violation" and an "act of aggression that posed a real threat to the safety of our citizens."
NATO's response was equally decisive. Fighter jets from the Netherlands were deployed and helped to shoot down the drones, marking the "first time NATO aircrafts have engaged potential threats in Allied airspace." Additionally, German Patriot missiles based in Poland were placed on alert, and an Italian airborne early warning aircraft and a NATO refueler aircraft were also launched.
The European Union's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, described the incident as the "most serious European airspace violation by Russia since the war began," and indicated that the incursion was intentional, not accidental. Poland has since made a formal request to invoke Article 4 of the NATO alliance's founding treaty, which allows any member to call urgent talks when it feels its "territorial integrity, political independence or security" are at risk.
The drone incursion came as Russia unleashed a barrage of strikes across Ukraine, including in the western city of Lviv, near the Polish border. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that eight Russian drones were "aimed toward" Poland, calling it an "extremely dangerous precedent for Europe."
As the situation continues to unfold, the international community remains vigilant, with NATO and its member states demonstrating their commitment to defending the alliance's territorial integrity and responding decisively to any further aggression.
